The Town of Oxbow has nominated Councillor Bob Goodward as a stand-out volunteer to the CBC/Radio-Canada Champions of Change Competition. The program celebrates activism and citizenship through voulnteerism in Canada.

Goodward has been a driving force behind the develpment of the Moose Creek Regional Park (MCRP) and Golf Course. A long time Park activist and Town Council representative, in 2001 Goodward started co-ordinating the building of the Golf Course which opened in 2003. He's currently treasurer.

Bob has also been a member of the Oxbow Lions Club, a local volunteer service group, since the early 80's. He says his serious volunteer time kicked in after he retired from his position as a computer technician for Sask Wheat Pool in 1997.

Goodward isn't much for blowing his own horn. Oxbow's Community Development Officer noted that "we just about had to sit on him to get him to accept the nomination" as a Champion of Change candidate.

"I guess I needed something to do," he said, "I don't think of it as volunteer work. I just like doing it.So I took some initiative to get things done out there; there there are others willing to help."

"Right now," he said, "we're finishing off 61 full service seasonal campsites for next year. Tomorrow, I'll be down in a sewer trench." He had three people and a backhoe lined up to help with the work. It's been a big project and taken up a lot of time, he admits.

"But," said Bob, "there's satisfaction when the project's done. It's about enhancing the community and the Regional Park and the town of Oxbow."

Featured on national CBC radio and TV, a panel of exceptional charitable and volunteer leaders will select ten finalists; five for volunteerism in Canada and five for making a difference internationally. Finalists and winners to be announced early 2011 will receive a substantial cash prize for the charitable organization of their choice.
